La Motte
In the early part of the 18th century, a French Huguenot purchased land in the Franschhoek Valley from a German immigrant. He named it La Motte, after his village in Provence and began the planting of vines. This process begun in 1752 continues to flourish today under the guidance of Hanneli Rupert- Koegelenberg.
La Motte wines are produced using grapes grown in-house as well as other vineyards in Cape. This variety is responsible for the distinctive flavor of their internationally recognized brands. In keeping with times, La Motte has developed the Nabot farm as an organic viticulture unit; grapes here are grown without the use of pesticides or other chemicals. These grapes are used exclusively for the Sauvignon Blanc wine.
La Motte has won many national and international awards. In the 2010 Michelangelo Awards, it was conferred the Organic Wine Trophy – a tribute to its commitment to preservation of the environment. In keeping with its motto of diversification, La Motte is venturing into the areas of ethereal oil production and flower cultivation.
La Motte is as much known for its wines as for its dedication to culture. One of South Africa’s well known mezzo-sopranos, Hanneli has given this vineyard an identity of its own as a destination to enjoy wine to the tunes of classical music.
