Rust en Vrede
When President of South Africa Nelson Mandela received the Nobel Peace Prize, it was the Rust en Vrede wine that was served at the special dinner in Oslo. This has been an honor that tops the list of the numerous awards the estate has won.
Started in 1694, Rust en Vrede has had more than its share of ups and downs. A fire destroyed the front portion of the large estate house in 1823 – but over the years, it has emerged as a legend of Cape, embodying the resilient spirit of South Africa. The first modern wines were produced in 1978 and there’s been no looking back ever since.
Rust en Vrede is best known as the pioneer in red wines. The care lavished on the grapes throughout the winemaking process ensures that wines are complex and full bodied – a tribute to the matchless Stellenbosch terroir.
Rust en Vrede believes in quality over quantity – only about 20,000 wine cases are made every year; the international demand is so great that 65% is distributed across 20 or more countries. The estate has had only two winemakers in 30 years – a record in itself. This is probably why Rust en Vrede with an unpretentious 55 hectares of land has consistently delivered wines that have mesmerized the entire world.
