Stellenrust
Stellenrust, located in the midst of the Stellenbosch Mountains and green vineyards, was established as early as 1928. The area is well known for the excellent quality of soil that is most conducive to the growth of various varietals for red wine. A part of the vineyard stretches up to the Bottelary Hills which has a climate suitable to both red and white wines.
Around 2005, Stellenrust began a tradition that has brought a sense of involvement to the public. People are allowed to stamp grapes of their own – in effect, making wine for themselves. The wines are then labeled under the public logo. This gave rise to the concept of JJ Handmade wines that are produced without using any machinery – the entire process works on the principle of gravity. These wines, handmade in the real sense of the term, are produced along the basic principles of winemaking in France.
Of all the family owned estates in South Africa, Stellenrust is today considered one of the best employers. The permanent workers at the vineyard, numbering about 70, were made majority shareholders on a portion of the farm. Happy employees make for increased production. This is probably the secret to Stellenrust’s sublime wines that delight the entire world.
