Vergelegen
In Western Cape, close to Somerset West is located the historic Vergelegen wine estate. This estate has a heritage that dates back to 300 years ago. The wines of Vergelegen, crafted entirely by hand, are the ultimate sensory experience to connoisseurs the world over.
The fortunes of Vergelegen have been a story of highs and lows right from 1685 – fluctuating between prosperity and hardships. 1992 saw the first significant vintage harvest; after this, production grew by leaps and bounds, making the estate the proud manufacturer of some of the foremost wines of South Africa like the Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon blanc blend.
At the Vergelegen estate, great care is taken to ensure that the grapes are provided optimum conditions for growth. Taking climatic conditions into account, the sites with cooler temperatures are planted with white varieties whereas the warmer regions are used for cultivating the reds. There is a rigorous monitoring of the quality of the soil as well as climate – all towards ensuring that the finest wines are prepared on the estate.
Vergelegen is also renowned as a vineyard of great scenic beauty and has played host to visits by international celebrities and heads of state. In that sense, Vergelegen has grown to disprove the original Dutch meaning of its name which means “remotely located”. It is today very much close to the hearts of wine lovers not just in South Africa, but in the entire world.
