Warwick

Under the capable guidance of Michael Ratcliffe, the Warwick winery, a family business, has created a name for itself in wine industry circles. This farm in Cape was initially called as “De Goede Sukses” until 1902 when it was purchased by Colonel W. A. Gordon. He was an English officer, fighting in South Africa during the Anglo Boer war. He decided to stay back in Cape even after the war was over. He named the wine estate as Warwick in memory of his Warwickshire regiment.

Eventually, the farm was purchased by the Ratcliffe family, who began cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon. Initially, the Warwick estate only supplied their superior quality grapes to other wineries. Later, with Norma Ratcliffe taking an active interest in wine making, the first cellar was set up in 1984. From then to now, there has been no looking back. The Warwick Trilogy – a wine of the Bordeaux style has been a frontrunner among South African wines.

Another feather in the cap for Warwick is that this estate is one of the rare wineries that still possess a range of its old vintages. Varietals like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are allowed to age for as long as 20 months, usually in old French oak barrels. The wines of the Warwick vineyard have a typical alluring herbal tinge that is often imitated, but never duplicated.
