Arniston Bay is named after a British ship called ‘The Arniston’ which sank on the reefs in this area, killing about 372 wounded soldiers on the way back from Ceylon to England. It is to the credit of the South Africans that they’ve converted one of the worst disasters in their history to a brand that’s synonymous with carefree moments of outdoor dining and easy wine drinking.
